Tire ? for Kansas City 1ers
Hello, I'm moving from TX to Leavenworth KS in a couple weeks and was wondering if you all are running winter tires (snow/ice). If yes, how long do you typically keep them on?
I'm just trying to see if the $ invested will be worth it for the few times I may have the opportunity for snow/ice driving. I say opportunity because if it is too severe, I have other transportation options. There is no real need for them here in TX and have driven in some light snow / ice with good results (albeit very careful driving). I grew up in upstate NY so I am pretty confident with snow driving. I also won't have much of a commute for my work, and have the option of getting a ride in the Mrs' mini-van if the weather is real bad.

I live in Kansas city and drive from December to March on performance winter tires but on my e36 m3. The Dunlop tire, forgot the model.. Winter sport 3d or something.
I think most rear wheel drive cars have trouble with all seasons when there is a wintry mix or some snow. It wont be everyday, but when it happens the tires are worth it... Last year was pretty bad, had lots of precipitation. I wouldn't chance it. I rather have the traction I need to stay out of trouble. Welcome! |

Not from KS, but I keep mine on from about thanksgiving til about march. Even if it's not always snowing, when the weather gets cold the rubber in summer tires gets too hard and you lose almost all traction. If you get cold rain, snow, or even dry weather, your traction will be seriously compromised if on summer tires. Though some people run them, all seasons aren't too great for these cars either since they're pretty much "in the middle" they don't really excel at cold or warm weather driving. Considering the amount of torque our cars put down to just two wheels, you need as much traction as you can get!
