Damnit...I think it's grown on me.
I bought a 2011 135i M-Sport in 2010. I waited for the N55 engine, which I still think is outstanding and superior for a daily driver.
But recently I got to drive a 1 series M coupe, and now I can't stop thinking about it. I hate the styling. I hate the stupid black & orange interior, I hate the alcantara accents, I hate the lack of sunroof, I hate the silver exhaust compared to my stock black one, I hate the fact that it's largely just a throw-together model from the M3 and the Z4... But I love it. It's everything my 1er is not, namely it makes me smile to drive. The "permagrin", as it were. I don't know what to do now. I got my 1er for a VERY good price with an almost non-existant APR. I can go get a 1M right now...for 4.99%. UGH! What to do, internet, what to do?! |

Is nice that at this point you have a option to get a 1M, hope is not w/ a hight premium. From what i read it may not be the perfect car for you. |

Not sure what to make of this thread...if it's supposed to be sarcastic or funny, but as mentioned above, it seems to me that you're not very performance-oriented considering you're complaining about the lack of sunroof and the color of the exhaust tips.
Not only that, but apparently it's a car which you don't like the way it looks, and the main things we love about it you seem to hate - I'd say do the next owner a favor and pass on the car, because I'm sure there are thousands who would love every single bit of the car like most of us do - that is, if you truly have a chance at owning one; production stopped in October for the US and there are very few left that are new, with a premium slapped on them. PS: Nothing against the 135i with the N55 engine. That is exactly what I got rid of to obtain this all-around superior (in my opinion) car. |

If you have the funds and can find a 1m to buy, I say go for it , you love it already or you would not have test drove 1,plus it's an investment .

I do SCCA & HPDEs, I've had a Spec Miata, a Boxster S, and a 400+ HP turbo VW R32 as previous cars, that have all seen track time. You may notice that they were all either verts or had sunroofs. I know all about the weight differences, center of gravity, etc., but I love the sunshine & open air. I use my sunroof for most of the year, and I'm honestly worried I'd have a really hard time without it. The exhaust tips are nice in black, but all of the previous cars had them chromed, so not a huge deal, I'm just very detail-oriented. Put it this way: it also drives me crazy that my speedo on the 1er only goes to 280/160 instead of 300/180. Quote:

Would be nice if you could post the details on the available 1Ms to help those who are searching for one.

Maybe look into just modding your n55 car? I mean it seems like the only thing you like at about the 1m is the power. You should be able to get pretty close with tune and bolt ons with the n55. You are obviously familiar with tuning cars so it shouldn't be a big deal for ya. I bet for under 3k you can make the n55 as fast or faster than a stock 1m. Then you have the power, the sunroof and the interior you want.
If its more than just power then you'll have to consider cost options more. LS diff is expensive for 135. Suspension changes to come pretty close with aftermarket aren't cheap either. |

As you can see with my avatar, I own a 1M in VO and I also own a LeMans blue 2011 N55 135 M-sport with DCT and sunroof... I love both of these cars. I am not afraid to say that I'm selling my 135. Even though it feels faster with the DCT and it seems that I speed more with the 135 as it's just a blast to drive.
But most professional auto enthusiasts and reviewers gave mixed reviews on the 135 and it never really got the respect it should have. I could see and feel the shortfalls of my 135 compared to the M3 or other strong cars. The 1M is overflowing with professional praise and respect...I think we all know that the 1M is going to be a better investment than a 135. Everything I was going to mod on my 135 (suspension, 19" tires/rims, quad exhaust, tune, LSD, intake) is included in the 1M...and under a warranty. My 1M feels tighter, more responsive, more solid, more powerful, sounds nicer and overall leaves me more satisfied. And the added knowledge that only 1 person out of over 400,000 in the USA can own a 1M...the uniqueness of only 740 1M cars built for US market...that's a nice side benefit. In more than a year of driving in the USA, Austria, Germany and Italy, I've only seen one 1M on the road and that was more than 6 months ago...an AW 1M. On a daily basis I see 135s and 128s, in fact on my small military base here in Germany, on any given day you can see more than five 1 series coupes...all looking the same...white, blue or grey or black. Nothing like my 1M...so that's the one I'm keeping. |

I should clarify further. What I mean by this thread is that I didn't love the look of the 1M, but the more I look at it, the more I like it, and when I see it from certain angles, those big fat rear wheels, hefty arches pulled over them...it's growing on me.

I was just saying to a friend yesterday, I know exactly what this situation is like.
Imagine, if you will, it's 2003. You just bought a 2.8L VR6 GTI. It's a great car, fast, awesome exhaust note, you love it. Then, the R32 comes out. It's limited edition. It has better traction, a better body kit, more power, a better & symmetrical exhaust, an upgraded interior with bespoke bits and little badges everywhere, and only comes in a few colors, 1 of which is unique to the car. Sound familiar? Suddenly you're in your 2.8L GTI going, "Hey guys, my car is still cool, right?! Right?!", as everyone, including the tuners & aftermarket, go after the new limited edition car... That's how I feel right now...and I bought the R32 as a result, and loved it for years. I've inquired at a dealer about a white 1M. If the numbers line up, I'm jumping ship. |

people on this forum really need to sit back and calm down sometimes....the OP was clearly indicating that all the things he "hated" about the car are now growing on him...no need to wolfpack this guy....
I say that after just 1 test drive, if all these things are growing on you about the 1M then once you purchase and live with it for a week, you will be absolutely in love with it, you will not regret your decision....with all those options in your area I say GO FOR IT!! |

As a current owner of a 2011 135i with the N55 (it's for sale!), and now a 1M, I can tell you that once you drive a 1M, there is no comparison. Everything about the 1M, driving dynamics, steering, brakes, engine, just EVERYTHING is better in a 1M.
It took me a while to decide on getting a 1M because I didn't want to buy a new car again this soon, but I don't regret it in the least.
