Thumbs down 135I + 3in of snow = not a good idea!

I'm running full snow tires on this stick shift car and I'll be honest all of 3 inches of wet slushy snow on a slight incline equals death.
I couldn't believe it!
I'm running standard tire sizes but with full snow, sorry not 100% of the make or size of snow tires. But the simples little incline and 3in of wet snow and this girl was like a fat chick rocking sneakers in the middle of an ice rink. Not pretty!
Thank god I live in NJ but any suggestions just shy of going back to a FWD car for dealing with snow?

were you driving with the dsc turn on or off? I turn it completely off as letting the rear wheels spin some is necessary and with it on it'll just kill all the power to the car.

I was in Whistler, BC yesterday and couldn't make it up a hill to my friends cabin. I have new LM-60's and there was about 3" of snow. DSC turned off.

I wonder what it would have been like with a torsen differential...

NJ as well.....135i in snow "anywhere" IS RISKY at best even with snows. I barely could not make it up my plowed driveway to go to DMV for inspection..It snowed at the BMW dealer at the closing, 90 minutes from home with RFT's A welcome indeed.... !! at that time I made the decision to keep my AWD Honda CRV as my beater and honestly in 160,000 miles it has been almost perfect except for funky brake rotors..the 1 stay's tucked in with Mr Battery Tender keeping her ready for a nice day!!

I am not sure what all of you guys are talking about. I had my 1er equipped with 225s Blizzaks WS60 and in 3 winters I didn't have any problems. I was even driving around on the second day of snowmagedon we had last year in Tri-State area. In the light and fluffy snow I didn't have problems going over drifts bigger that 12" and even driving around 6" of wet and heavy snow wasn't much of a problem. 135 with snow tires proved to be much better winter car than my old GTI granted I never used snows on that car.

Sorry to hear you had problems. We had probably the same system and the roads were plowed after rush-hour. So, 3" of snow in the roads and I did not have any problems with my blizzaks. To be honest...this is the first RWD car I have owned since college and I believe with snow tires it is better than FWD and all-weather tires in the same conditions. Besides...the 135 with snows is a blast to drive

Heavy wet snow is more like slippery liquid ice...most vehicles will have issues with it, no matter how well prepared.

That said, I haven't gotten my 135i stuck in four winters on its Nokian Halkapeliitta winter tires (the Finnish know winter!).

+1 I was actually amazed at how good these cars actually do in the snow (also running DWS).

i had no issues at all this last snow storm in the NE...

I have Dunlop Winter Sport 3d's

Absolutely driveable with or without DCT or DSC on... I had a blast.. i even let my fiance's 18 year old younger brother drive my car so he could get experience in a RWD car in snow properly equipped with snow tires.. I would never of done that if I felt it was dangerous in any way!

135 bad in the snow you say? My car is calling you a liar

I think its your foot more than the car, I live in Syracuse man and you have nothing on our unplowed snowy hills. Just turn the traction control fully off.

Hmm, rocking all-season RFTs on my 128i and haven't gotten stuck once, not even last winter when we had back-to-back-to-back storms that dropped tons of snow on us. Easy on the gas, DTC on for questionable traction situations, and you should be good. With dedicated snow tires, I can't imagine that these cars would perform worse??

No problems here with DWS all season tire's in up to 6 inches of snow, I usually leave the DTC on the half setting and get enough slippage for traction on that setting without the DME killing power/applying brakes. Once I get going I'll turn it back on.

I'll only turn it completly off for the really steep hills which are few and far between where I live though we do have some inclines and declines getting to where I live.

Ran the Dunlops for 3 years and they NEVER failed. They were way better than my wife's SUV which has all seasons. Unfortunately, you could not get a set of Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds this fall so I had to replace with Michelin Alpins. So far, no snow to speak, but I have no fear of snow in this car.
