Annoyed at Continental
Learned a lesson this week. ordered a set of stock size (215/40R18 and 245/35R18) Conti extremecontact DW's from tirerack last week, rears were in stock and arrived at my installer last week, fronts, expected arrival date at warehouse of 1/20. check my order status today, and the fronts were on hold and the tire status was on backorder! I cancelled the fronts and am returning the rears.
this, with my 135 in the garage with a hole in one of the fronts down to the nylon cord from an encounter with a 9mm shell casing. I really don't feel comfortable driving on a compromised tire, so the pickup gets some miles on it. so, are 225/40 and 255/35's fully compatible with these rims? I know there are a lot more tires in that size than the oddball 215's, but I don't want to get burned again with a tire size thats not a good fit. are there any performance benefits to the larger tires, and why did BMW decided on these oddball sizes?! thinking of going with the stock size hankook evo's, but if the larger sizes are a good choice, then all sorts of possibilities present themselves. |

would I be ok just getting the fronts 1 size up and keeping the rears I ordered? just checked, and tirerack has the DW in 225/40ZR18 in stock, and it would keep me from having the rears shipped back, dealing with getting card refunded, and not having a car to drive for another week...
I would assume that it would not be a problem, but I want to be sure. |

The issue is winter. Tire producers only make winter tires from September to late january. Its nearly impossible to get them after christmas.

No issues with gaining the 10mm in the front and keeping the rears as-stock.
Next time, bump up the rears to the 255 though. Side-benefit to that is that your speedometer / odometer will read nearly accurate, as the as-delivered state from BMW is very optimistic (most cars are these days).

and yet another chapter in my tire replacement saga....
after deciding to go with the 225 DW's I called tirerack.... I ordered the fronts from tirerack, and they shipped them to arrive on Thursday. Tirerack contacted the installer, and requested that they hold the rears that had already been delivered, and not let UPS pick them up. On Thursday, the installer calls me at work, and informs me that someone forgot to mark the tires to be held, and UPS had picked them up! after making various incoherent gargling noises, I informed the installer they would be paying for return shipping. I then contacted tirerack to order yet another set of rears to be delivered to the installer on Monday. I contact the installer to make an appointment to have the rears installed on Tuesday and go ahead an arrange for the fronts to be put on the next day. But wait! it gets better. I drop my 135 off this morning, and the wife and I head to the mall in her 335. I get a call a short time later, from the installer, and he informs me the machine he has can't install the tires without damaging the rims! omgwtffailsauce! at this point, I have developed a rather impressive head cold, and the cold meds are keeping me zonked enough that I just sigh and go pick up my damn tires. managed to find a local installer that has a touchless machine and am going to try him this afternoon. Light a candle for me... |

I think it might do that by default, if you shop for a specific car. Reps from tire rack have said on this site, that 225/255 will work, on a stock height car. but many people are running them lowered as well.

I have ran 225/255 and never had any issues whatsoever. Although I did roll my fenders just in case. Any way you go, it's still peace pf mind.

No issues at all at stock ride height on the stock wheels...for either the 225 or 255 fitment, as seen in photo.

It did! one of our local tire companies put my fronts on in about 15 minutes, mounted and balanced for $30, about half of what the Firestone was going to charge.
when I told the tech that Firestone could not mount my tires, he looked at me in disbelief, "we mount tires on a hundred rims a day like that" can't wait for the mold release to wear off, fronts just a wee bit greasy just yet, that, and its a bit cool here too. kept the one front that was good, will check to see if the local BMW club has someone that needs an extra... |

This tire (225 x 45 / 18) is not just 10mm wider; the Aspect Ratio is also larger. Together, they yield a tire replacement that is a full 1.2" taller! How is it that that not an issue relative to accurate speedo, mileage, etc readings and re the proper functioning of ABS plus other systems that depend on a relatively similar tire height relative to stock? Btw, that pic of your car is awesome... Always felt thats the best angle to shoot the car from. Color looks awesome as well!!

Kind of a necro post above, but -
I deal in metric/inch systems every day. How did you come up with 1.2" taller?? Might want to check the math on that one.... 10mm wider = about .4 inches wider. Pretty sure there isn't a 3:1 ratio in that direction. ETA: 10mm delta X .4 = 4mm or .approx .156" difference per side, making total height difference about .32". This is theory, as some tire measurements aren't consistent/absolutely perfect across different brands. If the ratio went the other way, with a 225mm wide tire, the sdiewall would be massive. Ok, here's the math. tire size 225x45/18 225*.45*2/25.4+18 225*.45 = 101.25 *2 = 202.5mm Now convert to inches: 202.5/25.4= 7.97" add that to the wheel height: 7.97+18=25.97" Total overall height of the tire is 25.97" The height of the stock front tire is 24.77" therefore, 25.97 - 24.77 = 1.2"

Aspect is 40 percent, or .40X225mm. (not sure where the 45 is coming from) Gives me 25.1 OAH, close enough............... which is darn close to what I said above. Last edited by eaglemike; 05-16-2012 at 08:51 PM.. |
