Aluminium arms and suspension parts

Wondered if anyone has any experience on protecting these parts from the salty spray we get off the roads over winter. Have been told spraying them with WD40 helps but wanted to check first before doing anything. Do not want to get pitting on these components and spoil their appearance.

.....are you really that concerned about the appearance of the underbody of your car? Planning on parking it over a large mirror like at a car show every night?

They will get pitted, WD40 all over them (which evaporates quickly) or not.

Jezzer, ACF 50 is the stuff you want. Originally developed to protect US Navy aircraft, it has been on sale for a few years. It is very popular in the motorcycle world. Last time I looked it was about £14 a can.

What makes you think that BMW has not used some sort of protective coating on the alloy parts already?

I do not know IF they have, I am just curious why you think there is no coatings?

I would guess that all of the parts are hot dip galvanized for protection. Anyones guess as to what thickness or zinc alloy that BMW (or its vendors) use.

I know they haven't as I've seen a 1M thats been out on the UK salty roads for a few hundred miles and the pitting on the aluminium was unbelievable

Not personally because I never used to take my bike out in the winter. I do have friends who have used it and been impressed. Look it up online, it's clever stuff. If its good enough to prevent corrosion on multi million dollar fighters, it'll be good enough for a Beemer!

Oh no - Jezzer - please tell me this doesn't mean I now need to worry about cleaning then protecting under the car as well as the paintwork? I've been desperate to get a few dry hours to clean the salt off since the weekend. Seems like Friday may bring more snow. Owning a 1M is starting to dominate my free time.

Good question. Here's mine: Should anal retentive be hyphenated? Does it depend on whether it is being used as a noun?

Okay dude. You go ahead and keep busy making your undercarriage look factory new, I'll go "wreck" mine by driving it and keeping it clean.

Ridiculous...Just drive the car unless you are going to pull up to meets, put it on jack stands and take off the wheels to show everybody your M3 suspension components.

BMW has been using aluminum suspension components all the way back to the E30 M3 that had aluminum front control arms and those are just fine.

This is a little much... Clean the outside and don't worry about the underside.

I mean, it is a little obsessive to worry about the underside of things. I believe these cars rust and corrode the first day the vehicle is driven in the rain.
