I'm going to need to see pics when you do this. I'm thinking about doing the same when I need new tires. I'd go powdercoat though.

I had mine done at Central Powder Coating in Brea. Check out my garage to see the rims. Quality is great, no issues what so ever. I have gloss black with a clear coat. Great company.

I just saw your photos of your gloss black powder coated wheels. They look great. Can you give me details on the cost, and time it took?

Thanks

If you do PC the forged 220s, you must use a low temp powder or risk weakening the wheel - just a heads up.

Yeah that's the one factor that keeps me from getting it done. Such a hard decision. I may just wait and buy a set of black zcps.

There are places that do it, so you should be able to find one - especially in Cali. A good paint job will be fairly durable also and has the added bonus of being able to touch it up with more success than a PC job. I had my OE STi wheels painted gloss black and they held up very well over the 5? years I had the car.

Personally though I prefer the black ZCPs to the black 220s.

I've seen gloss black 220's and they looked amazing. Way better than I thought they would look.

Check out Reliable Powder Coating in Downey. This is where Mackin (distributor of Volk Racing and Advans) takes their wheels to be powder coated.

I had forged wheels painted with normal auto paint. They did a handful of coats and clears and they had no paint chips or flakes 1.5 years later.

Ive also seen forged wheels that were powder coated, literally soften up at the track and fall apart on the hub.

Be careful.

Anytime you buy cheap wheels, yes. Those would have broken hitting a speed bump.

They are cheap but they have good widths and offsets for the dorifters.

When I last had forged BBS wheels. I called them and asked them if I could power coat the wheels and they flat out told me DO NOT do it. And that was on a FORGED wheel. I mean... its up to you OP. Dont even think about it with a cast wheel. That's just asking for pain.

When you powder, you weaken the metal. It becomes brittle. Maybe you can drive around town for many years and have no issues. That very well might be.

But chances are much higher that once you get that rim warmed up again (Track, mountain road drive, aggressive driving), and or slammed into something (pothole maybe) that its going to brake.

Plus, if you curb your wheel, its 10X harder to get it fixed and repaired. Today's auto paint on rims lasts just as long as the paint on your car.

Your choice, but I would save the money and play it safe. Others can argue all they want. They are the ones who do it for show and drive there car to work and back. Ask your track friends what they think...

Good luck!
