question re: Strut / Firewall connector bar Z4M

Hi folks.

The black strut support bar that goes from my firewall to the driver's side strut housing has sheared in half at the bend. I was just told by the dealer that i have to purchase BOTH bars and the kits retails for almost 400 dollars. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is this really the case? Does anyone have a spare on lying around?

thanks!

Kaz

YES THANK YOU!! they sheer when you're driving down wilshire boulevard and then all of a sudden, at 45 miles per hour, one of the wheels falls into a 4 inch deep pot hole...at least that's my assumption...

Ouch. No damage to the shock tower or the welds that support the brace itself? If so, I guess that's lucky, as those can break/shear as well.

Dealer must thought you meant the performance strut bar (I hope). 400 dollars. v3.2mc has it pegged--much cheaper! If it were 400 I'd go with the Strong Strut firewall bars--those are 185.

If your firewall brace secures with a bolt you need new bolts--bolts are one use and need a 41 ft lbs torque as a pre-load. Pics of both kinds here. Then and then about 1/4 turn past that (angle torque of 105 +- 15 degrees). Nuts use 30 ft. lbs torque. See post 11 here for torque specs.

I assume the wheels were driving the car? It should have said "I drove into a 4 inch hole at 45mph."

Atleast we know the stock bar TRIES to do something.

I paid 30 bucks for a pair of firewall bars. Was originally going to paint them sepang to match my strut bar (the one that goes across).

+1.....

with a strut bar in place im wondering if this would have actually damaged the strut towers..... very possible, im guessing their will be far more damage to yuor car then your aware of, check it vigorously

It doesn't TRY - it DOES do something. Wouldn't break if it didn't. It obviously loads up. In this case the elastic limit was exceeded.

Whether or not it is stiff enough is a whole other topic...
