I need an ///M doctor opinion

Hey people... so this morning I pulled into my job's parking lot doing about 20 mph its a long entrance.... when the left front tire touched the 15 degree incline I heard a snap! I could tell that some thing was not right but I parked and when to work. Then at 5:30 I started the car and to me it sounds louder and I could feel more vibration even at idle.

I drove home shifting at 3k hoping that it won't leave me half way home... but I made. I just took this pic and I would like to know what you think might be broken now.

Krap! I phreaken knew it.... but I was hoping that it wasn't.

How many motor mounts do we have on the Z4ms? I see two so far.

How difficult is it to replace them.... do you know?

Two motor mounts. If you are mechanically inclined you could do them your self. It's not overly difficult

Thanks gents, I guess it was a prefect timing.... I just got my headers from Donovan yesterday, so I guess I'll be doing both jobs at once.

Any danger if I drive it gently the way it is?

I wouldn't even attempt to drive it with a broken motor mount. It's most likely not the mount that's broken, but rather the bolts holding the engine to the mount are broken. I just proactively replaced mine with the motorsport bolts a few months ago, hoping to avoid issue like this.

Well, I just order a set of AKG motor mounts... I guess I'm going all out now.

I know this will make the car louder and the vibration will increase... but I'm not worry about that since I drive with my windows down 95% of time and my shifting problems will be gone.

I'm also putting up my euro headers at the same time so the Z4M is going to sound and feel really nice once I'm done.

your problem isnt the mounts, its the bolts that connect from the engine into the mounts. theirs four bolts that go into the plate that connects to the mounts. In your case all or most of one or both mounts have sheared. So this link wont solve your problem, you need to buy the bmw motorsports bolts or something equivalent.

When your car is cold, stick your hand down into your engine bay and you can feel the actual bolts if you know where to look.

Just so I'm clear, you need to order 4 of each of the screws and a washer for each, correct?

Correct 4 bolts for each mount.

I'd highly recommend looking into the NordLock washers (available thru places like McMaster Carr)

BTW The passenger side mount is accessible only from underneath. However the drivers side mount can all be done from above, just need an assortment of ratchet extensions & swivel joints.

100% agreed. Motorsport bolts and Nordlocks are a must. When not broken, this is an easy job except for the two forward bolts on the drivers side. When broken, it may be a real PITA to get the bolt out of the block, or wherever it broke off. Everyone's got an opinion - in this case, IMHO, the increased NVH that will come from those motor mounts, which will unquestionably be substantial, is not worth it on a street car, particularly when all it needs is different bolts

I imagine that if the bolts have not snapped, then you can remove and replace one at a time without perhaps keeping a jack/block of wood under the oil pan?

Ah, another project!

Questions:
1. If using the Nordlocks, should loc-tite also be used? (seen both sides of this in posts, Nordlock website seems to say "no")
2. When using Motorsports bolts and Nordlocks it seems the torque spec. is 22Nm. What is the 59Nm +90 degree spec. I see mentioned.

As always, thanks!

My buddy has these mounts on his e46 ZHP and the NVH is hardly perceptible as long as you stick with the 80A mounts

3AZ 59NM: Is for the reinforcement below the engine.

I took it down so I could torque the motor srcews in the back for my tools to fit.
