Oil change

Just changed the engine oil and filter for my own peace of mind now that I'm about half way through before it's first (after the run in) scheduled service. I'm also running Evolve's stage 1 remap so thought it would be a good idea.

Since changing the oil the engine is smoother revving and slightly quieter at idle....didn't expect that and it's definately not a placebo effect either!

Correct. I used Castrol Edge 5w30. Halfords have 20% off selected Castrol oil at the moment!

Here's my step-son's blog post on changing the oil in my 1M:

Got mildly flamed for using Mobil 1, but the last time I checked it seemed to lubricate stuff just fine.

The only BMW approved engine oil for 1M or other N54 fitted BMWs in Chile is Mobil 1 0W-40. That's what I have in my car after the first oil change and it does just fine, maybe even better than whatever there was in the car from the factory. If I can find out how to provide, next time I plan to use Castrol's 5W-30, just to see if there is any meaningful difference.

I changed the oil on the 1M myself for the first time yesterday. Interestingly, it only required 6 quarts to fill.

I made sure the car was level when I drained it. I was a little gunshy about overfilling, and since the car can run up to 1 quart low without problems, I put in 6 quarts and took a drive. I figured I would then top it off based on the reading from the e-dipstick. I was surprised to see it read full. I watched it again this morning when I drove to work and it still reads full.

Any thoughts on why I didn't get a complete drain?

When you changed your oil... was the engine hot(fully warmed up?) or cold?

I'm betting you changed it with a cold engine - and some of your old oil was still in the engine.

Did you also change the oil filter?

Was the car level when you drained the oil?

I took a drive before the change to completely warm it up, and made sure it was level. Rear tires were on ramps and the front was jacked up. I measured the top of each wheel hub and even corrected for the slant in my garage floor . . . it was level.

I drained the pan first, but the drain plug was still out when I took the filter cover off. As soon as the filter cover was loose, there was a lot of gurgling as the oil drained out of it. The flow from the pan increased a little after that and I let it drip for a good 10 minutes. There was just a trace of oil left in the filter housing. Maybe it would be better to do the filter first, but I don't see what difference that should make. I'll try that next time.

Can oil get trapped in the cooler?
