Weight-loss idea?

Has anyone tried to remove the (heavy) original carpeting complete with its molded foam and replace with felt/carpeting that is used for speaker enclosures?

If so, how much material did you need? Any caveats to watch for?

Thanks.

I haven't stripped a car newer than the E36, but the carpeting itself isn't actually that heavy. It's the sound deadening material that weighs a lot and, to a lesser degree, the foam in thick places such as under the floor mats. I don't think it's worth fooling with unless you're going to remove the sound deadening and foam. IIRC the total weight of foam and sound deadening on the car I stripped to make into a racecar was around 60 pounds (E92 will have more).

I completely agree - this is a one way street. But if you are serious, why only carpet, foam, etc. What about seats, motors, cats, ac, and the list goes on. A 100 odd pound reduction is perfuming the pig.

Just stripped my E92 this week. It's actually different than the E36 in that the insulation and sound deadening are built into the carpet. It's two pieces, and they are very heavy, but theres so much more weight in other places. I bet I pulled 600 pounds out of the car, and that was just from unbolting parts, no cutting...

600 pounds are some serious numbers... What exactly did you pull out? Did you take some pictures?

I'm talking about shedding a few pounds...not creating the Ariel Atom of BMW M3's...

Good luck getting that through State inspections.

curb weight is 3700.

say we take out everything, AC, heater core, all interior - theres nothing left except the cage and a single seat. gut the doors, remove the roll up windows...

can 700 lbs be possible?

With absolutely no fluids in the vehicle and pretty much every single accessory removed, you might just come close. Reference.

Ok this is slightly off topic, and I know looking at Car & Driver, Motortrend & even the brochure for the M3, a number around 3700 lbs pops up for this car. I just recently got all the baseline figures for my car, so I could see it's progress as the project continued. My car definitely weighed in at 3520 with more then a 1/4 of gas. Gas weighs 6 lbs per gallon, so even if I had a full tank I wouldn't have broken 3600, so where does this number come from?

By the way the error of the scale was +/- 10 lbs.

Is a massive overestimate.

I also don't follow your (DJDeez) conclusion from the link that 3000 is possible. Do you have any estimate whatsoever of things like AC, heater, windows and perhaps fluids will weigh in at over 300 lb?

After seeing this, I'm going to agree that I overestimated, but I wouldn't say it was by a massive amount. I'd re-estimate to between 400 and 450. The doors are gutted, and will be skinned by the cage builder. Airbags are out. Carpet is removed, as are all unnecessary brackets. Rear package tray is being cut out. I'll also thin out the wiring harness, and my exhaust will shed a bunch of weight.
