what oils do you guys use for 6mt and diffs? + Flinchy's mini Amazon group buy thread

****
For anyone wanting to get anything tacked onto my order (which i will place on Tuesday evening latest) to save a few $ on shipping:

check to see if they'll ship to australia (just for ease really) - for oils (redline and royal purple i checked) there are multiple 'ads' for each oil (say 5w30) but only some will ship to australia, and some are MUCH cheaper than others

post a link, and the amount you want, and i'll confirm the total comes to what you are expecting -

i figure since there could be a couple of people wanting in, i'll make the order in a day or two then

****
Having a read around the forums, and getting some 5w30 redline (from amazon super cheap!) motor oil, i realized i should probably do my gearbox and diff oil since i can bet they've either never been done, or at least not been done in forever (certainly not the 30,000 km i've owned the car)

the transmission is getting a bit less smooth as time goes on too, which does seem to be a fairly common complaint

i hear redline make some pretty schmick tranny oils, but which one is recommended? i have no clues on diff oils

thanks

Engine oil: Castrol Edge Titanium 0w 40

Rear Diff: Motul Gear Competition 75W140 1.0L Diff Transmission Gear Oil

6MT Transmission: Redline D4 ATF

The Redline D4 ATF is great, makes shifting through the gears so smooth (especially 1st nd 2nd becomes effortless compared to the OEM).

So much conflictig info - some people seem to use 75w-90 in the diff

And why atf in particular for the tranny?

It's almost like everyone uses something different and it hardly matters lol

Yes, lots of info out there and can be very confusing.

There is a good discussion on this thread

I used Castrol SAF-XJ (without the "+FM" friction modifier), 75w140 in my diff. It is what BMW uses, so that's good enough for me. You could also use a Redline product as long as its GL5 rated. I would ask Redline direct though. Note - in order to change the diff fluid you will need something to suck out the old fluid. BMW did not give us a oil drain plug... only a "fill" plug!

In my trans I first tried using BMW fluids( MTF-LT-4). But it wasn't much better than my old trans oil(MTF-LT-3). My tranny was still notchy cold from 1st to 2nd gears. I then switched to Redline's AFT-D4 and am VERY happy with the results. Much smoother gear change operation.

For engine oil I use German made Castrol RS Edge and now G.C FST oil.

You want a thin oil bc the tranny has very tight clearances. Redline has always recommended their ATF-D4 for MANUAL TRANS BMW's. I think they even say you can use their AFT-D6 which is an even thiner oil in our cars. But check with Redline to make sure.

BMW says 75w140 GL5 for the diff. I know some people use a 75w90 gear oil... AND one that is GL4 rated and not GL5. I would not downgrade the gear oil specs like that. Especially with diff gears. People probably do it because its HARD to find the correct 75w140 GL gear oil in the states.

I guess it only matters when your diff and trans fails due to the WRONG fluid being used. I think BMW knows a thing or two more than some parts guy selling your gear oil. The best thing to do is do your own research and find out BMW gear specs and buy an oil that meets those design spec data. AND change said oil - sooner rather than later.

In that above link(a few posts above in this thread)... you can see how dark(bad) my old manual trans oil looked with just ~30K kms(? I can't remember the exact miles/kms) on it.

Just like engine oil... the BEST oil is NEW oil.

Whats gl4 and gl5?

The one thing that i think when anyone says 'bmw recommendations are the best bet' is their whole 'lifetime oils' statement, which is so far from the truth lol

Ed:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Whats_the_difference_between_gl4_and_gl5_gear_oils

Well that.. Kinda.. clears it up lol

Ed: you say NOT to downgrade to gl4, but redline atf-4 IS a GL4 - whats ao different about the diff to the tranny in this regard?

I was talking about the GL5 specs in regards to the diff oil specs.

Use what you like... For me I have used Redline's ATF-D4 in past manual trans BMW's with very good results. So that is why I switched to Redline. I dd first try BMW's lifetime trans oil... but I did not care for it.

Yeah i read a lot of people in this forum use the atf so i can believe it lol

I just want smoothness in my tranny, and for my diff to not break lol

I'd still guess it's a good idea to drop these oils every couple of services (depending on driving habits of course) so even if it's not the most perfect choice - like you say the best oil is a new oil.. Not like it's an exorbitant expense either

Yeah i had a read through, will again

The synchros cones have the same friction material as the aft clutch plates. That's why atf can be used.

ok so redline D4-ATF for the tranny

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-30504...rds=redline+D4

2 quarts or one?

and for the diff:
http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-75W14...d+line+75w-140

75W-90 wouldn't be suitable at all would it? it's a teensy bit cheaper (couple of bucks lol) - 1 or 2 quarts of diff oil? or more?

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-5W30-...s=redline+5w30

5w30 for the engine

12qts somehow only has $10 shipping, it works out LOADS cheaper - unless i can find an amazon sale for single quarts that will ship to australia lol. 7 quarts from ebay of redline is like $180-$200 shipped, 12 from amazon is cheaper lol.

similar price to ebay there actually

anyone keen for a mini group buy from amazon?

i don't need 12qts, but it's cheaper to get 12 than 7/8 from anywhere else... be an idea to order a few and split it up, think it's... 6.9qts/service plus a bit for flush isn't it? 8qts/piece?

ED: wait, so need ~4 quarts for gearbox (gallon?) and... 2 quarts for the diff?

but yeah, anyone who wants in on some of this oil - i'll be putting in my order either later tonight or tomorrow/tomorrow night, so lemme know

Freight forwarding is very easy to arrange to get around this limitation.

that's true, but then you have to ship to the freight forwarder (usually $10-$30 depending on item size) and pay a brokers fee (usually $20 minimum)

unless it's something that's MASSIVELY cheaper from amazon, ebay tends to be a better (and MUCH easier lol)

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LUBRIMATI...ht_1473wt_1031

this will work out cheaper (if it's the same unit... i'm not 100% sure exactly what i'm looking for... a pump that screws onto a quart bottle i guess?)

there's also http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Plews-Lub...604bad960#shId

and they're clearly over-estimating shipping, i'd suggest send that seller a message asking about actual shipping costs, as it should be no more than say ~$15 even.

i had a read of the amazon feedback, most people saying it doesn't fit on redline bottles perfectly - if that's what you wanted it for, i'd make sure first (you may have already, i dunno! )

ED: for anyone wanting to get anything tacked onto my order:

And if there's no confirmation by Tuesday night?... well i need this stuff for my service asap, and shipping takes time, the order's going in tuesday night lol
