VSOT - Government to slug internet orders?

According to today's paper, the government is considering whacking a tax on all items ordered over the internet. GST exemption could be lowered from $1000 to $100, and the average tax hike could be $60 on imported goods. What will it do to the prices of all those natty bits and pieces we bolt on our cars? How do we feel about that? Would that alter the way we vote?

The government task force found that a total of $60 million in tax and duties was being dodged at present. My contention is, that since we have been able to buy freely over the internet, retailers here in Oz have been forced to lower prices to compete, and customers have had more dollars in their pockets to spend on other (taxable) things. The internet has opened our eyes to what other countries pay for their goods, and how much has been stolen from us in the past.

So will the government now say: "no, you can't have that, we have to protect union jobs and make Gerry Harvey and his mates even richer"? I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!

If it really means abolishing other state tax especially stamp duties. I am quite happy to pay an extra 10% on all my internet purchases.

Agree totally, but likelyhood of abolishment of stamp duties is nil.

If that happens i will be happy, at least that will put me on an even playing field with all the non business owners.
I pay Duty and GST on all purchases i make on the internet.
I would be happy to carry large stocks of parts if this was to pass through parliament. Just like the old days, gee i actually may start to make some money again

It'll never happen. Just pollies making noise. It would cost them 10 times the revenue to implement the system an that's before you work out the Feds are the ones that need to spend the money on the new systems, BUT the states get the revenue. LMFAO it'll never happen!

That being said, sure charge an extra 10% in Internet purchases, still cheaper to buy OS than locally!
