Help with BMS OCC install

Hi everyone,

I'm in the middle of installing the BMS OCC but I'm having trouble getting the U-bend hose over the OEM nipple. Took me an hour or so but finally got it on however, the hose is now only about 2mm past the catch and I can't get it any further in. In the BMS DIY instructions they've pushed it in maybe 5-6mm past the catch.

I'm wondering if this pipe holds a lot of pressure during engine operation and if I don't push it further in, do I risk it popping off whilst driving?

Or, is it ok to leave it as is and just complete the rest of the install?

I've tried heating, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting etc and I'm all tired out =(

If someone with a bit of experience in this could give me a bit of advice I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

2mm doesn't sound like much at all. I did manage to get mine seated quite a bit more than that. Photos?

Hi sharkatron,

Thanks for much for the reply. Here are 2 photos that I just took.

It's in a 'decent' amount but there's definitely more room that it could be pushed in. I just can't seem to get it in any further no matter what I do

The picture in the BMS install instructions show the bottom of the U-bend pipe pushed pretty much right up to the bend in the plastic valve. I'm worried that if I keep pushing/pulling I might break the valve connection to the pipe below because it's plastic. I've heard a few unnerving creaks from the plastic already.

If the PCV pipe doesn't hold too much pressure I'm thinking that it might be ok because the engine cover should be pressing the U-bend right up against the firewall. But yeah, any feedback would be much appreciated.

Yeah I used a hair drier until it was pretty hot to the touch. That's how I got it on as far as I did.

Unfortunately I can't seem to get it in any further and I'm worried about breaking the nipple if I try too much harder.

Did you take the connector off? Or did you leave it on and try to push the hose over? I took mine off and just twisted and it went all the way

That's a good idea. The instructions didn't say you could pull it off and do it that way. I might see if I can pull it off now. No idea how though haha.

Hi froop,

I think pavo335 is right - from memory, the tube should just twist straight in - there shouldn't be any connectors in the way. You're nearly there - hard part is always getting the clips off the OEM piping

Does the "like glue" aspect also mean it's irreversible?

Yep Peter unclipped the connector when he did mine.

There seems to be two different hose sizes or maybe poor quality control as about 50% of the OCC i have fitted have been a good fit, the hose will just push on with out to much effort. But the other 50% i have had to remove the plastic fitting and fit the hose with the help of a bench vice and some oil as the hose is about 2mm smaller, be careful that you don't brake the plastic clipping system. Just be careful

Thanks for all of the help guys!

I ended up leaving it as is and installing the engine cover back on. It seems pretty tight and with the 2 hoses wedged up into the firewall behind the engine cover I don't think there'll be any way that it can come off.

If it does...well suck to be me

Also installed the M3 strut tower brace while I was there.

One thing, if you're planning on doing the install for for our cars it comes with different screws for the strut bars in addition to a different center mount compared to the E9x kits. 2 13mm hex bolts and 2 allen bolts for each side.

DIYs say to torque each bolt to 25ft/lb but it is impossible to torque the allen bolts to that without stripping the inside. Ask me how I know

Also, once you have it installed, it's pretty impossible to put the cowl back on due to the new strut brace and bolts pressing up on the underside of the cowl which means you can't get the center clip to go under the rubber seal. I don't think that the OCC mount clip on the strut brace helps either...

If you push really really hard, the clip just snaps right off and then the cowl fits fine. Ask me how I know

Peter is used to being able to easily slide small things in. He's not as practiced with larger diameters and tighter fits.

Hey froop,

Just to check with you, were you able to get the hosing against the rear firewall seated without pressing the u-bend slightly together? Just that with mine, there was a little bit of pressing on the u-bend, which obviously means a slight reduction on the diameter of the tubing, possible restriction of airflow. It's not completely restricted, but slight. I've had it on for 4-5months now no issues, but wondering if there are any longterm effects?

Hey shark,

The straight and the u-bend pipe are kind of pressed together up against the firewall. I had a quick look and feel of the piping before I re-installed the cowl and it didn't look like it was squashed much.

I just took it for a very quick drive and everything seems ok. I can seem to hear the bypass valves a lot more clearly when I let off the accelerator but I have no idea if that's new or just because I didn't have the radio turned on.
