Open trailer for car shipping. Anyone used?
Hi guys – I’ve used some enclosed carriers in the past for some other cars but was wondering if anyone has any experience with a good open carrier as well?

I have used allied auto transport a couple times, once when I sold my E93 335i and twice when I bought and sold my M5. All three times it was an open trailer. The E93 was lowered and scraped a lot when he was trying to get it on the trailer, he had to use a lot of boards and ramps to finally make it fit. When I received the M5 it was absolutely filthy, meaning you couldn't tell if there was any damage from the trip so I made the trucker sit around, despite his protest while a mobile detailer cleaned it up to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with it.
When I sold the M5 there was a bit of a problem...as some of you may know the SMG clutch tends to go out on M5s and I think the trucker may have ruined the tranny on the car because within a couple weeks of receiving the car the buyer told me the clutch failed, he also said it smelled like burning clutch when the trucker took it off the truck meaning he was slipping it a lot to move it around on the trailer which is very bad for it. Its a lot cheaper than a closed trailer but these guys are used to toting around buicks and toyotas not high end performance cars...you get what you pay for I guess...

I would only used an enclosed trailer. Not worth taking the chance with something else.

^ I agree with The Tech. I have used Closed Trailers 3 times and will use 3 more times in the next month. The only way to go.

If you are going do to open carrier, might as well drive it. It's about the same in terms of wear and tear except you don't get to drive it.

It's better to pay the extra for a enclosed trailer. You don't have to worry about rock chips and your car getting dirty. Also you don't have to worry about it being out in the open during bad weather like a hail storm or something.
