Wife Says, "Absolutely Not!" to M3 and C2S
Alright all, I need some ammo from my fellow car freaks. I'm bored out of my mind with my B8 S4. I'm working on the numbers to end my lease early and buy a 991 C2S(should have done a 24 month, not 36). I always try to ease her into my ridiculous, money wasting ideas. I know all of the tricks and have become a master at manipulation. Here is where I am in the process but could use some help.
First, I begin to mention to her how displeased I am with my current B8 S4. This has been a staple for me in past acquisitions as I start complaining about a certain feature or idiosyncrasies that bother me. She made no disparaging comments, so I proceed to step 2. Second, I start to throw out the idea that I may be able to find some one to buy my S4 because I've taken such good care of it. I also mention, I may be able to trade it without losing much. Again, she has no response. Proceed to the next step. Now I mention that I'm going over to the Porsche dealer to take a test drive, but I make it clear to her that I'm just going to look. I state, "I may not even like the car." She rolls her eyes but doesn't stop me from going. I view this as another buying signal. Next, I have her trapped in a car for six hours. I start explaining the Porsche configurator and begin explaining to her the various types of 911 models and all options available. I also explain, for the 50th time, my life's dream to own a 911. She comments on how she thought the M3 was my life's dream. I stutter a bit, then explain how both are my dreams. She humors me for about two hours of the trip. She closes our conversation with, "You aren't getting a 911, that's ridiculous." I'm not a quitter. I just know I need to tread lightly. I then begin to show her forum pictures and ask questions like, "What color do you like better." Or, "Which wheels do you prefer?" She doesn't tell me to get lost, so I view this as lets keep this going. Although, I can tell she knows where this is headed. I also ask my two year son where she can hear me, "Do you want to ride in a 911?" I think this is a genius tactic. Tonight I tell her that I have two different dealerships working on the numbers. Well, I hit my second major road block. She says, "There is no way you are going to have both an M3 and a 911. You are not getting one." I smile as rebuttals are rolling around in my brain. I abstain from commenting and figure I'll come up with something better after a little careful thought. Being an semi-pro at this (I've been married for 8 years), I think I'm about 50% of the way to my desired result. Naturally, I could do the wrong thing and put my foot down, but we all know that's not the right thing to do. I'm interested in some of your crazy reasons why I need and M3 and 911 in my garage. Yeah, you probably don't get married any time soon. That attitude will probably cost you half of what you own. I commend the OP on his set up and delivery and wish him luck. I realized long ago that marriage means no "yours" and "mine", but rather "ours". So now I have an M3 and she has whatever she wants.

Because 911 is simply better.
Just let her test drive one and im sure shell understand and even push you to buy it. Hopefully you can continue to drill it in her that you cant not have one. |

Married or not, I buy what i want, especially when it comes to cars. I love it when guys have to ask their wives for permission to do anything. Might as well pull the trigger now. |

But then again, your asking a group of car owners who are most likely to cheat on their spouse, according to reports

Lol!!! In all seriousness, as a couple you decide a budget and as long as you stay in those constraints who cares what you buy. Without that, it's almost like she's telling you what to wear everyday.
It also doesn't hurt that I set our budget. My wife cares less about monies. Thank God!

I was prepared to get the "man up" comments, but this is a great idea. I didn't even consider doing this. I need to arrange for a baby sitter, take her to a nice lunch, stop by the dealer and have her drive the car, and then go buy her a new purse or something.

I did get a chance to drive a 991 4S though. Beautifully built car, with a price tag to show. May I ask why you are getting sick of the S4?

I think the main issue is owning the superior M3 at the same time. This will be one of my concerns with getting a 911 and owning an M3. Am I going to start to dislike the M3? |

911 and M3 are two different cars totally! but both with loads of fun. Try surprising your wife with a candle light dinner and a nice date and when you have her in your arms, try gently slipping the 911 again. But you seem to be doing great! Best of luck man!

Soooo is a 991 S or M3 in your budget? An S4 is not in the same category. I'm guessing your wife wouldn't have as much of an opinion if these cars were easily within your means. Go for the M3. It's not crazy more than your current ride and offers a whole lot more fun. E90 should suit you nicely and can be found with low miles, loaded for $50k and under. The F80 would be good but I bet it's $80k+ when optioned.
