I know the oil filter should catch this but..... take a look
What's up peopleZ.
Ok - I went under the car yesterday to change the oil and look what I found. Not sure if this is dirt mixed with oil, burnt gunk and oil or what. Good thing I change my oil every 7K miles. Whatever it is, it sat on the magnet so it must have some soar of metal parts...... thoughts? |

That would not bother me any, We have a fleet of chevys and fords with magnetic drain plugs and they look like that or worse every oil change. Seen them since new and some have over 100,000 miles now with NO problems. If an engine never shed some small amount of metal that would mean they should never wear out and we know that's not true. By the way only a small amount of oil goes thru the filter while it is running most of the oil bypasses at the oil pump regulator.

The car only has 42k miles and I don't track the car. I wonder if replacing the oil filter every 3.5K miles will help.
I didn't think of saving a small amount of oil for a test.... I'll def... do it next time. |

Get the free sample collection kit from Blackstone.
I just put an ECS magnetic plug in mine at the last change. Will be pulling it in about a month. Be interesting to see what it's growing. I'll post an observation in this thread.

I don't think changing the oil filter more often would matter unless the filter is being completely clogged and I can't see this happening with normal changes. When you remove the filter what did it look like? I am guessing pretty normal.

The oil filter looked normal after being used for 7k miles.... So If I didn't have that magnet, I guess that junk will be running through the engine - which probably causes other parts to wear out faster no? |

ECS magnetic plug, heck yea. Do a quick google search.
ECS is great for or parts but I'll never buy any of their in-house products or kits. |

No...if you didn't have the magnet, all that gunk would have gotten filtered out by the filter. Since the magnet is at the bottom of the pan, it sticks to the magnet first before having a chance to get even get to the filter.

Just changed my oil.
I also had some "fur" on the magnet, but about 1/2 as much as the OP. 93k miles on the car. 5800 since last oil change and first use of magnetic plug. Also snagged an oil sample for my first Blackstone.

I had magnetic drain plug for last two oil changed. The first changed I had more particles on the plug but the second time there is a thin layer. I change my oil every 6 months or 7500 which ever comes first. The average mileage is 5500 to 6500.

First Blackstone report just came in. Things are looking good!
I can stop having rod bearing nightmares now. The fuel in the oil and the 0.5L make-up oil may be related. I should probably do a compression check.

That's very good news for a change
Questions on the Blackstone report: 1. Is "Universal Averages" the averages of all cars or all S54 engines only? 2. I'm assuming that "Unit/Location Averages" is the cummulative average for this motor only? |
