Rear ended by school bus

What a way to start the weekend...

Heavy rain on my drive home yesterday afternoon and I come up to a long line at a red light in a school zone. I immediately notice a school bus approaching me and absolutely not slowing down. The only thing I could do was to hang on.

Pics of the carnage below. Both C-pillars are creased, which doesn't sit well with me. I was able to limp it home (about half a mile), but will have it towed to Performance BMW Collision in Chapel Hill on Monday. All this with only 3900 mi on the odo.

Kicker is that since it was a public school bus, I'll have to be reimbursed by the county as they are self-insured. I wonder how much of a run around this will be...

Oh my god... That is just not good. I wish you well on the repair. Hopefully things will be okay with you, finances, and the car. Glad to hear you're okay.

Just call your insurance agent and let them deal with this. I hate to say it but your car might be a total loss being its a 2008.

Is the rear parcel shelf bent? I seem to remember hearing that that qualified the car as a total loss, maybe because it indicated underlying frame damage. I'm just thinking with the C-pillars bent like that...

Anyway, good luck.

Rear shelf is bent - not severely, but definitely bent. Impact was so hard that my sunroof visor slid halfway back (from closed).

Yes, full of children (elementary school aged). Luckily none were hurt. Bus driver claimed he was "distracted"...

If the rear and both qtrs are damaged then ins will just total it. In dealing with the county, unless your trying to file an injury claim and get money for pain and suffering just file with your ins pay your deductible and let your ins company subrogate or probably sue in this case with being self insured for what they pay out plus your deductible which would be refunded to you when its all settled.

Man, that sucks. Glad both you and the busload of kids are all ok.

At 3900 miles, it was barely broken in.

Ohh man. And I see only 3,900 miles. Man that sucks. (I was looking at your 1Addicts "join date" and thought your car was a '08. Sorry)

Well... at least you and all those kids are fine. I hope the bus driver doesn't change his story/position. Like I said I would just consult your insurance agent on this.

I got rear ended a year back and it wasn't half as bad as that and it turned out to cost a bit more than 10k to repair. I can't imagine how much work that's going to be to set the frame straight. I really doubt it wont be a total.

If it were me, I'd hope for a total. Even if they do fix it, it might not drive the same. Then there's the issue of the big hit to what the car is worth. If it's totaled, it gets rid of my loan (gap insurance) and I can start over fresh on a new car.

That is really bad luck for you. As others have said, just let your ins co deal with it, I hope it's totalled. Looks like an expensive fix. Bummer.

What a discouraging situation to be in. I'm glad to hear no one was hurt. I would hope they total it. Cars are never the same after major damage like that. Good luck from here on out!

Hopefully your insurance company gets you a decision sooner than later, maybe even this coming week.

There is a decent selection of new 2013 135 up on autotrader as of today, but that total is getting smaller by the day.

Chapel Hill BMW does great work, so at least you have that. On the other hand.. I took my car in to them this weekend to get my battery cable recall done and now my passenger windows won't auto roll up. lol. Either way, still sucks. I have wrecked one of these already and I know your pain. :/
