Small Plastic Grates?
So before we got hit with 15° and snow here in the south, I decided to get outside and change the oil in my car while it was still 50° yesterday. I noticed a bunch of pine needles and leaves along the plastic shroud near the front windshield and started to pull it out because.... it bothers me for some reason.
Anywho, at each corner of the plastic shroud under the hood hinges I saw a plastic piece that appeared to be broken just sitting in a vertical position in this small "galley" I guess would be the best description. However, when I pulled it out, it wasn't broken at all, it appears to be a single unit. Can someone explain to me what these are? There is one on each side, and I would assume they prevent leaves and stuff from falling in said galleys, but they were standing vertically, rather than horizontally allowing the grates to capture sediment more efficiently. |

There are two removable plastic screens if you will to screen debris from going down and clogging the drain/galley. I'm pretty sure this is what you are talking about. The pop out from time to time. Just press it back in.

I pop them out all the time to clear leafs and "helicopters" in the summer and fall after car washes. They are there to keep debris out of "galley" as you say. They dont snap in or anything just kind of rest there.

Alright, that's exactly the piece I was referring to. I found it kind of odd that they just sit in there. Are they supposed to sit vertically or were mine out of place from previous owner?

They should sit so that the grate is horizontal so it catches all the debris. They keep crap from going down into the plastics under the engine.

I'm always amazed how much crap gets in them. Every time I pop my hood I gotta pull stuff out of them. No matter how careful I am some always manages to fall Down the holes. At some point I'm going to have to blow them out.
