Would you buy an ex demo M5? lots more questions from me as well!
First of all I need to say thanks to everyone that has responded to all of the questions that I have asked recently...Im new to this forum, have previously been an Audi Rs4 man but you guys are helping me make the move to the M5 world so much appreciated!
So I was all set to buy a used M5 over the weekend but lets just say it didn't happen due to some fairly poor dealer negotiations that put me right off. I loved the car and it had a very good spec but was probably a little overpriced and the dealer was not prepared to negotiate at all or even hold the car for me for a week even after I offered to put a deposit down (The car has already been for sale for coming up to 3 months) Another forum member however made me aware that he thought another very similar M5 was soon to be up for sale...This particular M5 has even more spec, has 6000 fewer miles and is 2.5k cheaper. This particular dealer has been very upfront with me and said that there is the odd little thing here and there to rectify from a cosmetic point of view so they will also be adding 4 new super sport tyres, repairing 2 scuff marks and refurbing one of the alloys. Other than that the car has been described as mint... Ill be putting a deposit down tomorrow which Ive been told is refundable if I'm not happy with any element of the car as I haven't even seen any pics!!!!(AM I MAD TO DO THIS??) There is one catch....It is an ex demo...Would this put you off....? This car was 87k new (2011) and is now being sold for 44k so seems like a good deal. |

At that price as long as you extend the warranty I wouldn't be too concerned. Assume the car has had a hard life. If something breaks It will be a warranty claim.

I would never buy a demo car. Think about how they are used. Someone wants a test drive, it's started up and handed over.. and repeat.

I would get it in a heart beat. I manage a dealership and only the owners, GM, Sales managers and finance managers get demos. The higher end cars will only be had by the owners and GM (or maybe a sales manager like myself thats been there a long time!)
All in all, we dont abuse the cars and take very good care of them. Its not as if an M5 was used as a test drive car, no dealers puts a car like that as a dedicated test drive car to be trounced by any and everyone. I wouldnt be too worried.

I sell my demo's all the time. I would highly recommend buying a demo.

Come on guys we live in the UK and in this crappy cold weather no one waits for the engine to warm up before booting it. Simple attitude its not your car so you are going to thrash it. An important factor he will only be given a 12 month used approved warranty as car is going to be 3 years old this year. Extended warranty with NIL access is over £1000 for year 1 and in year 2 it goes up even more. If it is such a bargain why hasn't it been sold? I wouldn't touch it. |

These cars were meant to be driven; evidence suggests the ones with the hard break-in actually fare better in terms of oil usage than the ones that were babied.
I wouldn't sweat it; as long as you get it with the warranty/service pack, and she checks out OK in a thorough inspection, go for it.

If the car is ex-demo, where else has it been? Would not have been a demo car for nearly 3 years so that is the area I would concentrate on. There were not that many demo M5s available in the UK (according to my dealer: maybe he just did not want to bother to get me one for an extended drive???) and the one I drove actually was being run by the Manager of the Dealership group. As long as the car has FSH and you can account for where it has been, etc, sounds like a good deal. No deal till test drive, though!

1) The car is not officially on the market...hence I have not seen any pics etc...however I have seen the spec sheet and it is well.....fully fully specced as you would think an ex demo would be 2) I have done my own digging around as far as mechanical history goes...Only 2 services have been carried out as is expected with this mileage and apperas to have been well maintained. 3) Car has been an ex demo plus one owner Ultimately, I will not complete the deal until I am completely happy when I eventually see the car and test drive her... In addition, Im not prepared to buy one of these new...( I will never buy a new car) so I appreciate there is an element of risk..Ive therefore done as much due diligence as I can on the car but feel re-assured that the car is coming with warranty (which will be renewed every year anyway as long as I own the car) and also has the service pack. What more can I do lol? |

I generally am wearly of buying a demo, but you have done your research and it is a good deal. There are always risks in life. Sometimes they pay off quite well. I would buy her, enjoy her and not worry about it for a second. Hell, with these cars, there is NO guarantee, even if you bought it used from me and I treat my cars better than I treat my wife and kids.
