What are M performance parts?

Hi guys.

Sorry for such a basic question, but I was wondering what exactly are M performance parts? Are these aftermarket addons? Or do these fall under the "accessories" tab when ordering the BMW, and are installed by the dealer/BMW ??

In other words, when I am ordering the car, and I want the CF splitter, can I just specify that in the order?

Also, can these be dealer installed at a later time, like if they are available in the Fall, but I get the car now, can the dealer (or an aftermarket shop) just install these then ?

Pretty much yes to all your questions. Some BMW performance parts can be installed at port; most (all?) at dealer. I would guess that CF splitter will initially be dealer-installed. You can buy performance parts at a discount from places like GetBMWParts (Tischer)

http://www.getbmwparts.com/partlocat...subcat1=138716

and have them installed wherever and whenever...

They are aftermarket accesories.
Performance parts do not go in the car build order.

You might order some performance parts at your dealer at the time you order your car, and your dealer or importer might attach them to your car before it is delivered to you, but it remains aftermarket equipment.

some dealers put their m perf parts on ebay. thats where i bought my interior trim kit and front splitter, for couple hundred cheaper. both are easy install at home with couple tools you can get at any local auto store.
i highly recommend self install. ive heard some dealers screw up splitter installs, then having to fix things with plastic adhesive. save yourself whole lot of money, and ultimately its always enjoyable to work on your car.

I agree that some parts can easily be self-installed.

However, for those that are unaware, installing M Performance parts yourself (instead of having them installed at the port or by an authorized BMW dealer) means that the parts will not carry the BMW warranty that the parts would've otherwise come with.

Food for thought.

I don't trust myself doing it, not the greatest with my hands, but good to know that it should be dealer installed for warranty purposes. Are they typically available when the cars hit the market or is the release staggered?

The only issue I see is "what warranty coverage" ? Its a piece of plastic. The chances of something happening to it that would be covered under warranty is remote. Even discoloration over time they will claim is from 'use'.. Ill get mine after market and installed at a good local shop.

Plus, if you are building out a production slot, BMW accessories can be installed at the port. They are then included on the window sticker and there is no labor charge for installation.

I had the black grill installed on my M5 when it arrived in January. It was only a $185 part, but the labor would have been about the same if the dealership did the install. Instead, when the car arrived at the port they installed it right there before shipping the car to my dealership.

Another benefit is if you are leasing. Previously, all accessories (like performance exhaust, etc.) could not be included in the lease. Now, if you have them installed at the port they are listed on the window sticker and can be included in your lease.

I assume the replaced parts are provided to you?

Do you mean the original part?

No, I didn't get the original grill. Never actually thought about that. If be pretty pissed if I did the performance exhaust and they didn't give me the stock exhaust as well.

It just started 1/1/14. Before that it wasn't possible. My understanding is that "they" are the BMW folks who prep the car after it has been unloaded from the boat and before it is transported to the dealership.

For the West Coast it is the Port Hueneme Vehicle Distribution Center. Back in 2006 the BMW section had 84 employees processing ~400 vehicles/day. They remove the shipping protection (waxy coating and/or felt pads). Minor shipping damage is also repaired. I believe is damage exceeds 3% of the value it must be declared to the dealer (unless it is a part replacement with new like part). They have a paint shop on site. Repairs must pass new vehicle quality standards.

When all prep is finished the vehicles are released to the shipper to go to the dealers.

I had that thought as well, since the M-performance parts you buy are not simply charged an "upcharge" like, say, wheels. You've technically paid full price for the original part that came with your car (the grill) as well as the new M-performance one you bought.

For something like the exhaust, if it's installed at the port, does it come with a 4 year warranty, like the rest of the car?? I think I saw an answer that said yes, but not sure. Also, do they give you your original exhaust? (I'd demand it)

The port-installed accessory program started much earlier than that.

Port-installed M Performance parts were available as early as May of 2013. I know this because I had several of them installed at the port in Baltimore prior to delivery.

Yes.

No. You would have to have your exhaust installed at the dealer in order to keep it. Utilizing dealer installation will also ensure that the part has a warranty to match the vehicle.
My responses above in bold. Hope they help!

Port installed accessories will also have the same warranty as the car.

I didn't need to know that.. now I feel sick, thinking that my "new" car could have been damaged enroute then fixed up at the port. Does it matter in reality? No. Does it matter psychologically? Yes. Much like hot dogs. They taste so good, but when you find out whats in them, it makes me sick. I don't need to know such details.

Or like stool "transplantation" to treat C.dif bacterial colitis (putting someone elses poop up into your bum). I don't want to know.. Just do what you have to do.
